We had some great fall river fishing, but now temps are really starting to cool down. We've had a couple of mornings where the bay in front of the resort was skimmed over.
We've been busy, busy getting ready for the ice fishing season. Doug tore down the old silver ice house and is in the process of building a new one to replace it. He also built a new Portable out house to put on the ice this year for those of you that don't like to do the bucket thing or running in to the lodge.
We've also added nice cushy chairs to the ice houses this year and the wooden benches now serve as tables. I added a page on the web site so you can check them out.
Reservations have been coming in, so if you haven't made yours yet, give us a call.

Summer is back for a few days, high right now at 10:20 am is 80. Later in the week it's supposed to drop back down again.
The sea gulls have been sitting on the river, which means there are some Shinners there. Reports are that they are the small (pins) ones. River temps need to drop some for the larger hardier ones to come in.

September already? Where did the summer go? Todays high temp so far has only hit 64 and it really feels like fall. Hopefully mother nature is just playing a trick on us and we'll still see a few more weeks of warm weather.
Forcast for the next few days. Temps seem to get warmer each day.

Well it's March already. It's been a really busy winter. Fishing still remains sporadic, one day it's really good and the next day it's not and it's the same from house to house, one house does good and the next one not so good. You definitely have to work for them.
Groups leaving today said Tuesday was a really good day, yesterday, a little harder, but they still cleaned some fish.
Best lures are small glo and gold.
Our weather patterns have been all over the board this winter, nothing consistent which we attribute to the way the fishing has been. Some stable weather for the rest of the ice fishing season would be really nice.
We're still running our midweek special

I hope everyone had a great Christmas, I know we did and as for New Years all I can say is WOW!!!! what a way to bring in the New Year 8-14 inches of snow and howling winds. Doug has been busy plowing here at the resort and on the lake.
Fishing has been really sporadic, some days it's good, some days it's not. This weekend people were catching the nicer Walleyes suspended and said those that were suspended hit the hooks hard. That's where the electronics come in handy.
I'm sure once our weather stabilizes a little, fishing will really turn on.
Today the guys started working on taking the ice road out deeper. Lots of deep snow and drifts to work through.
As you can see from the forcast below it's going to remain cold for awhile.
Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 3. Wind chill values as low as -28. West southwest wind around 6 mph.
Tuesday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -3. Light and variable wind.
Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of snow before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 11. Light north northwest wind.
Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -8. North northwest wind between 3 and 5 mph.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 0.
Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -11.
Friday: A slight chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 6.
Friday Night: A slight chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around -5.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 10.
Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -6.

We're off to a good start with the winter ice fishing season. With the sub-zero temps we had for a few days the ice measures 17-19 inches right now. The ice road is currently open to 4 wheeler and foot traffic and the resort small light resort rigs. It sounds like the road will be open to bigger vehicles starting Monday.
The guys have been dealing with a couple of cracks out there. But they are bridged and healing nicely.
We currently have 4 fish houses on the lake to take care of the early ice fishermen that we have had. Tomorrow Doug plans on taking all the rest of the houses out.
The fish reports are coming in good. With the usual mix of small, keepers and the occasional big picture fish.
We still have a couple of openings between Christmas and New Years.
Because of the great response we had to last years mid-week specials we are doing it again this year. Starting Jan. 16th 3 night cabin and 2 days of fishing for $180.00 per person. This special is for arriving on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

Hi Everyone!
It's been awhile! We had great fishing all summer, great numbers of fish and lots of big ones. We're still seeing boats fishing in the river and reports are very good.
The river shinners are running the river with tons of small ones and a few really big ones mixed in, so trying to stock up on them has been tough, for every pull of the net we're getting maybe a dozen or two to keep. Doug has been putting in alot of late night hours.
Temps have been on the warmish side but it looks like next week things will really start to cool down, so hopefully I'll be able to start some ice reports.
Doug has been working on getting the ice houses ready to go. Washing the windows, doing some repairs and some painting.
Winter reservations are coming in pretty steady so if you haven't made yours yet, give us a call.
We're running some pretty awesome specials starting Jan 16th, arriving on aSunday, Monday or Tuesday, Cabin for 3 nights and fish house for 2 days for $180.00 per person.
Also a special in theCaptains Quarters, fill all 8 beds on a 3 night 2 day package and the rate goes down to $215.00per person.

HOT! HOT! HOT! That's been our temp the last few days. We can say that for the fishing also.
Charter Boat was back at the dock at 12:45 with limits of nice size fish for everyone. Lots of fish in the slot were released. The fishermen on board were a very happy crew. Many were claiming that they'd never been on a trip like that before. No time to eat, barely enough time to drink beer, just catch fish.
This afternoon the guys are taking the rental boat out for some Northern fishing.
I can honestly say there have been very few "bad" days if any on the lake at all this year.
There's still lots of openings for a Charter Trip yet this summer, so give us a call to reserve your trip.
By Ships Wheel | July 14, 2010 at 10:17 AM EDT | No Comments
Fishng on Lake of the Woods continues to be good. It's been easy to catch limits of Walleye and Sauger. Many fish in the slot range and bigger are being caught and released.
Still several methods of fishing are being used. On days when the wind provides a nice walleye chop, anchoring and jigging, when the wind is a little strong for anchoring, spinners and drifting is the preferred method and days when there isn't much wind trolling or downrigging.
We do have openings in the cabin and the charter for the weekend.
We're offering a 10% discount on cabin only reservations just for posting on our blog.

Fishing continues to be good. People are using a variety of techniques to catch fish. Some are anchoring and jigging with fat heads, leeches and frozen shinners.
Some are drifting with spinners and some are starting to down-rig.
Temps for the remainder of the week look to be in the mid to upper 70's with the occasional shower or thunder storm.
We have openings in the cabins and dates available on the charter boat.
Check out the special deal we have going for the month of July for the Charter boat.

Fishing still continues to be great. The Rippey/Perry Iowa group that left today reported that yesterday was a catch and release day for them, They caught and released many, many fish in the slot.
The Wisconsin groups first day of fishing reports were fish on the smaller side. Hopefully today they'll get in to the bigger ones.
Due to our web page host I'm having trouble with the web page drop downs which happen to be all the rate pages, So until they get that fixed I'm working on getting the rates to the main pages so they can be seen, in the mean time feel free to call with any questions on the rates.
Don't miss out on the great fishing we have going on this summer.
We have openings in the cabins and on the Charter Boat so call and get your reservations.

Fishing remains fantastic. All groups are returning to the dock early with their limits. The number of big fish in the 24-30 inch range being reported is awesome. All I can say is that you really need to be here.
I do have openings for the weekend. So give us a call.

The sun finally showed it's face yesterday afternoon, it was great to be able to sit out on the deck and soak up some rays. And it's a sun shiny beautiful day today.
We have a group of 12 that fished yesterday on the Charters with Doug and Brian.
Fishing was great, they returned to the dock early with everyones limits of really nice size eaters (not the small ones) they also had to throw back several nice fish in the slot size. Fish was definately on their menu last night.
Doug and Brian have the same group out today.
Weather for today shows partly sunny with and east wind around 8mph. With a high near 72.
Maybe things will dry up enough for us to do some much needed mowing.
Tomorrow a 40% chance of showers with a high near 70.
The rest of the week shows chances of showers but the temps continue to go up a little everyday.
I do have openings in the cabins this week-end, so if you want to get in on some of this great fishing, give us a call.
By Ships Wheel | June 09, 2010 at 09:49 AM EDT | No Comments
It's a rainy gloomy day and a little windy here today. Those hardy enough to brave the elements have left the dock. I do see several boats on the river in front of the resort.
The forcast for the rest of the week shows possibility for showers with temps in the mid to upper 60's. I know that's different from what I posted earlier. But Hey it's northern Minnesota, the weather forcast is always subject to and probably will change on a daily basis. We seem to have our own weather pattern here and the weather man is not always right.
Starting tomorrow Doug is out on Charter trips for several days, so check back for the fishing report.
By Ships Wheel | June 07, 2010 at 10:27 AM EDT | No Comments
Fishing continues to be good. This weekends reports came from several different people using several different methods. Some fished shallow using spinners with leaches and nightcrawlers. Some deeper, anchored and jigging, and yet one fisherman told us he caught fish downrigging.
Weather forcast for the next week looks to be in the low to mid 70's with chances of showers here and there.
We still have cabins openings through-out the month of June.
Doug and the Charter boat has a busy schedule, but we still have some prime dates available.
By Ships Wheel | May 15, 2010 at 10:41 PM EDT | 1 comment
First day of the fishing season here at Lake of the Woods. What a beautiful day. Sunshine, warm weather.
Fishing was fantastic!!! Doug had the charter boat out with a group from Iowa today and came home early with everyones limits. (Randy you missed some good fishng) The rest of the cabins also returned early with their limits.
Spent the rest of the afternoon on the deck with everyone having a great time and enjoying the weather and eating some great ribs (thanks to the Fargo guys).
It looks like tomorrow will be a rerun of today. We're off to a great summer.
Still have time to book the May Charter special, so give us a call.
By Ships Wheel | May 13, 2010 at 12:19 PM EDT | No Comments
We've been busy, busy here getting ready for opener. First guests arrive tomorrow, ready or not.
The weather for opener looks fantastic According to Accuweather the temp is going to be 73 and mostly sunny. The rest of the week low to mid 70's.
The following week shows in the 80's, hows that, going from cold and dreary right into summer. Keep in mind that's subject to change, and probably will.
I hate to say it but we really could use some rain. River and lake levels are really low right now. Just like the snow patterns this past winter, any rain forcasted goes south of us.
I've posted some great Charter Package Specials on the deals page for May and there are openings still available.
We're hoping for a great, great season and we're hoping you're a part of it, call for reservations.

Yes the river fishing is starting to turn on. Doug and Bucky went fishing today. They unloaded at the Vidas landing at about noon, fishing for about 4 hrs. Between what they got in the boat and what Bucky missed,(Doug told me to say that) they figured about 50 fish today, several in the slot range and 4 between 28 and 30.They're planning on going again tomorrow, so come back for another report.I do have cabins open for this weekend and next week.1-800-315-2835
By Ships Wheel | March 26, 2010 at 03:57 PM EDT | No Comments
Our ice houses have been off the lake since March 17th. Ice still remains on the lake with 4 wheeler traffic only as of today. But it does sound like most of the landings will close to any traffic after Sunday.
I've added a few new pictures to our winter fishing pages.
The river is wide open past our resort but our bay is still frozen over, hopefully with warmer temps forcasted we'll see it go very soon. In the mean time it's nice to see the boat traffic going by. As for the fishing in the river, I haven't heard any really good reports yet. But, any day now the fantastic rainy river spring fishing should take off.
It's time to think summer!! Yep warm weather, boats at the dock, green grass and campfires.
If you haven't made reservations yet give us a call.
We're running some really awesome deals for charter fishing in May. Check out the deals page.

All groups are checked out. Group of 13 had a pretty good weekend fishing, releasing several in the slot including a 30 incher.
Another group reported best fishing ever.
2 groups reported fishing was a slow.
I do know that the fishing cleaning house was busy.
Weather for this week shows a high of 26 for today. Tuesday a high of 9 and low of -11, Wed. high 15 and low -1 the rest of the week back to mid to upper 20's.
I do have some openings for this weekend in the 2 bedroom cabins.
The weekend of March 5-6 I have 1 two bedroom cabin, 1/2 the Captains Quarters and the 2 bedroom house open.

Lot's of check-outs today.
Reports vary depending on which group you talked to. Some groups did well while some didn't do so well. Some people fishing in a house did well, while the others in the same house didn't do so good.
Everyone reported they had a good time while here.
Next groups start checking in on Thursday.
If you've looked at a calandar recently, you'll notice there's not many weeks left of the Ice fishing season. So if you haven't booked your fishing trip yet. Give us a call.
We're running some really great mid-week packages and we still have weekend dates available.

Ok, sorry it's been awhile since my last report. We had a pretty good snow storm blast through here. Starting with freezing rain and then alot of snow and wind, it took awhile to get things cleaned up around here.
Fishing the last few days has been slow due to a high pressure system hanging over us. Our Iowa group that left this morning said that yesterday was better than Sunday and feel that the fishing should pick up this week.
The forecast shows temps in the mid-teens to mid 20's which should make for better fishing this week.
I do have openings for this week-end. Valentines week-end is full. Then openings for the remainder of the season.
By Ships Wheel | January 17, 2010 at 10:02 AM EST | 1 comment
Fishing this weekend slowed down. Yesterday we had one house do pretty good, one house do OK and the rest were pretty slow. We really hate seeing the long faces after so many happy ones. but we do what we can do, we just can't make the fish bite. We still have people fishing today so hopefully the bite will be better today.
I finally made my first trip onto the ice yesteday, fished for about an hour, had about 8 bites but couldn't manage to get any up the hole. I think I'm a little rusty on the hook set.
We do have openings for this weekend, so give us a call.

Group of 4 came into the lodge last night to check out. Said they had a fun trip. they fished for 2 days saying they caught at least 150 fish during their stay. They caught lots of walleye and big sauger and of course alot of the little ones mixed in. They also said at one point they had to walk out side the fish house to just take a break.
What a fun group of guys, they've rebooked for March and we're looking forward to seeing them again.
I just want to remind everyone that this kind of fishing CAN happen here on Lake of the Woods But may not always happen.
I try to post the most honest report I can coming from everyone that's fishing.
Full house this weekend, But I still have openings for the 22nd-23rd and the 29th-30th.
By Ships Wheel | January 11, 2010 at 09:49 AM EST | No Comments
What a busy week-end. Lots of groups coming and going.
Thursday and Friday people were saying it was hard to keep both lines in the water with so much action going on.
Saturday the wind switched, coming out of the South and the fishing slowed down a bit. Sunday it switched again coming out of the North and fishing was alot slower for those fishing in the morning. But the afternoon bite picked up quite a bit. People are seeing lots of fish on the flashers
It looks like we're in for a warm up this week with temps ranging in the low to upper 20's
Night time temps are supposed to be above 0. These temps should make for good fishing.
I have a 2 bedroom cabin open yet for this week-end and next week-end also.
By Ships Wheel | January 08, 2010 at 09:09 AM EST | 1 comment
Good reports across the board.
A group of 4 yesterday kept a tally on fish caught. They totaled 58 for the day.
Another group of 4 fished a half day yesterday. Actually about 2 hours and caught
24.
We had a group of 6 from Iowa leave this morning. They fished for 4 days and said they had a great trip catching lots of fish. Releasing a 20-24-29 back down the hole.
Tv shows -18 below right now. According to weather.com we're supposed to reach a high of 0 today. Temps this next week are supposed to range from mid-teens to mid 20s for highs and mid-teens to single digits for lows.
By Ships Wheel | January 06, 2010 at 10:35 AM EST | No Comments
We've been busy, busy with cabin cleaning and fish house moving. Yesterday Doug and the guys plowed the road farther out on the lake to deeper water.
Groups leaving this morning. Most reported successful fishing taking limits home. Gold jigs seemed to be the choice yesterday. One group reported slow fishing. After changing to gold they managed to pick up a few more.
I did have a guy call from the fish house to check the Northern slot. He managed to get a 33" up the hole. But unfortunately it had to go back.
I have opening for the week-end of Jan. 22nd-23rd and also Jan. 29-30
By Ships Wheel | January 02, 2010 at 09:47 AM EST | 2 comments
Tv is showing -32 below right now. We did have a couple of vehicles that wouldn't start this morning. It's not hard to blame them. Geesh that's cold.
Our new groups are reporting the best fishing they've ever had. One group put a 29" incher back down the whole. Hopefully this swing in temp. doesn't shut them down for a couple of days.
Three groups checking out tomorrow with three new ones coming right back in.
The next weekend we have open cabins is Jan. 22-23
Mid-week openings starting Jan 10th. Check out those Mid-week deals.
By Ships Wheel | December 29, 2009 at 09:40 AM EST | No Comments
The last few days have been fantastic. All of our houses are on the lake and busy.
Lots of action, with fish ranging from small throw backs, nice eaters and yesterday produced several in the slot from 24" to 28" range.
Lots of fish frying going on in the cabins and everyone taking home limits.
Well.......... that is except one group going home a couple shy of their limit learning a valuable lesson about burying their fish in the snow bank in front of their cabin and what a snowblower can eat up.
The plowed road is open for travel and speed limit signs of 15mph have been posted. Please follow them. High speeds on the road can damage the ice.
I have 1/2 of the Captains Quarters available for this week-end. I usually require a group of 6 for this unit, but will consider 4 fishing a package.
The week-end of the 8-9 all cabins are full.
The week-end of the 15-16 I have one 2 bedroom cabin available.
The following 2 week-end I have several cabins open.
By Ships Wheel | December 20, 2009 at 05:18 PM EST | No Comments
Doug has been moving houses to the lake today, I'm not sure if he's just stageing them or taking them on out.
He did say that the ice was about 14.5 inches thick. He doesn't think that they plan on opening the road until the week-end which will give us a couple more inches.
For now it's still 4 wheelers, snowmobiles and lite ice vehicles.
We stil have openings for New Years.
The Weekend of the 8th and 9th is now full
The weekend of the 15th and 16th I have 2 cabins available.
Midweeks are available with great rates. check out the deals page.

Temps continue to stay cold, TV showed -18 last night, high right now it is -11 our high today is supposed to reach 2 above. The report for tonight and tomorrow is pretty much the same. Reports as of yesterday ice thickness is 10 to 11 inches.
Fishing reports are very good, lots of smaller saugers with nice walleyes mixed in.
We don't have our houses on the lake yet, we need a few of more inches for Doug's big truck. Hopefull towards the end of the week we'll be out there.
We do have openings for this week-end.
The day after Christmas we start full boar with a full house.
We have opening for New Years weekend.
The week-end of Jan. 8-9 I have 2 cabins available.
For those of you that can come anytime we have mid-week deals available. Starting Jan 10th.

The Tv showed we hit a low of -20 last night. At 9:00am it's still -7 below our high is only supposed to hit 10 above today.
There's still a few spots in the river that are steaming, which means that spot is still open water. With these temps I'm sure they will be froze over before the day is done.
We went to Morris Point yesterday, the lake is frozen as far as you can see and it looks really smooth.
